Postal and Lads Club share the points in a Dramatic Derby Day Tie
To the untrained eye Derby day at Webster may have looked like a dead rubber clash with nothing left to play for- however this couldn’t be further from the truth, with both sides having won one derby a piece this season, this age old rivalry was set for another classic encounter.
Postal again were stretched thin and were forced to call on some club stalwarts including a long awaited return of Steve Ure.
Postal started brightly and almost gave themselves an early lead as just a minute in Phil played in sully who’s cross found Luca who’s shot deflected favourably into the path of Webster who from five’s yards out with the goal at his mercy ballooned it into the neighbouring fields.
Only 30 seconds later sully played a dangerous ball across the face of the goal but it went through the whole goal untouched.
A promising start for postal who looked to be the far superior team in the opening stages of the tie.
The opener came in the 10th minute, Jones swung a ball into the box which sully touched down at the far side beat his man and hammered home into the far corner for 1-0.
(10 mins 1-0 Postal)
On 15 minutes Andrea’s again swung in a ball this time it was Doug who got on the end but he unfortunately couldn’t find the target and headed wide.
23 minutes brought some sublime prime-Barca-esque 1 touch football. Sully flicked it to Bruce who laid back to Scotty who slipped in Bruce but the move was let down by a disappointing final cross.
On 29 minutes came a moment of madness. A Phil free kick from 40 yards rattled the crossbar before Veitch headed the rebound off a lads club hand into the net. The referee then had a decision to make either award the goal or give a penalty. Instead somehow he gave a free kick the other way. Madness. The postal sideline left baffled by the controversial decision.
A minute later Grant made a great save after a scramble in the box to preserve postals lead
On the 32 minutes postal again played some lovely football with sully and Phil this time linking up but Ahmed’s eventual shot was poor, blasting over for a goalkick.
In the 37th minute Luca won a 50/50 in the middle of the park and from there charged past half the lads club team beating man after man all the way to the edge of the box where he unleashed a lovely strike which looked destined only for the top corner only for it to cannon of the junction of the post and bar.
HALF TIME
The half time charity crossbar challenge was again won by suspended McAuley with the injured Steven Abel putting in a very mediocre effort.
Buggie replaced Ahmed at the break.
The opening minutes of the second half offered little. half chances here and there for both sides.
50 minutes saw Patterson come on for Gianlucciotti
The hour mark passed and the game had gone pretty quiet neither team making much chances
On 65 minutes Ure replaced Wallace
2 minutes later Buggie won a flick on which looked set to fall kindly for the Lads club centre half but a charging Dunc nicked the ball away leaving himself through 1on1 with only the keeper. Mackenzie unfortunately fired straight at him unable to give postal the 2 goal lead.
68 minutes saw Lads Club play some nice football which eventually resulted in a decent chance however the striker fired high and wide.
The 80th minute brought a huge round of applause from the postal faithful as Ian Bruce made a long awaited return to the team after a 6 year hiatus.
Postal played some decent football with the old crocks linking up and rolling back the years but a lack of sharpness cost them from finishing these chances.
On the 83rd minute the lads club centre mid was sent off for a second yellow card.
As full time edged closer postal looked set to hold out. In the 44th minute a ball into the postal box saw the towering lads club striker head goalwards from a yard out but it was no match for Cormack’s cat like reflex’s. An unbelievable stop from the postal number 1 which surely would save the 3 points for them.
Postal were now into injury time just minutes away from claiming a famous derby victory. However Lads club had other plans.
On the 93rd minute a lads club long throw into the box caused chaos, Patterson attempted to head clear but unfortunately flicked it into the path of an unmarked lads club player who fired home from close range, Leaving Patterson and Ure playing the blame game.
(90+3 minutes 1-1 Postal)
The lads club striker certainly enjoyed the equaliser making sure the postal sideline knew all about it. We’re sure his TikTok fans will hear about it aswell.
Postal pushed for a winner in the remaining moments but couldn’t find one.
Full Time 1-1
A disappointing end to a well-contested derby for postal who looked set to hold on for the 3 points.
Still, it was ultimately a decent result considering the number of bodies and the fact that the management team had to make early substitutions to protect players ahead of the upcoming semi-final.
Another league campaign comes to a close with postal finishing 5 positions higher than last season- clear signs of improvement. And with the biggest game of the season still to come the campaign is far from done.
A first semi final in years for postal as they look to book their place in the final.
