Postal welcomed Glendale this weekend in what promised to be another tough test. The visitors are a familiar opponent, having beaten Postal twice last season, 3-1 and 4-1, so we had to be looking to put those results right this time around.

Postal headed into the fixture with a strong start to the campaign, recording three wins and two defeats from our opening five games. Glendale have also had a mixed start, with two wins, one draw and two defeats.

Game kicks off

Postal started the game positively, with Wallace winning an early free kick, although his resulting delivery was comfortably gathered by the Glendale goalkeeper.

The visitors soon began to create opportunities, with Buggie’s clearance falling kindly for the Glendale striker, who dragged his effort wide. Postal responded well, with McAuley flicking the ball through to Robb, who found Wallace with a square pass. Wallace struck the ball well, but the Glendale goalkeeper produced a good save to tip the effort over the bar.

Graham was then called into action at the other end, making an excellent save from a powerful Glendale effort before producing another strong stop shortly afterwards. Postal continued to threaten, with Buggie’s clearance falling delivering a dangerous ball for Webster, whose header went narrowly over.

Both sides created chances as the half progressed. Steele and Clark combined well down the right to release McAuley, whose cross was deflected behind for a corner. At the other end, Graham continued to keep Postal in the game with another excellent save following a well-delivered Glendale cross. Moments later, a Glendale effort beat Graham but Riddell was on hand to clear the ball off the line.

Glendale continued to apply pressure, with Riddell making another important clearance from the line following a corner. However, Postal were eventually beaten in the 33rd minute when Glendale’s number 9 was given space on the edge of the area and produced an excellent finish into the top corner, leaving Graham with little chance.

Postal looked to respond immediately, with McAuley doing well to beat his man before seeing his effort saved. Riddell then delivered a dangerous ball into the box, which Webster headed narrowly wide at the back post.

Glendale doubled their advantage just before half time, with a free kick delivered into the box and a Glendale player left with a free header. Very poor defending which left us with mountain to climb in the second half.

Postal started creating opportunities of our own, but Glendale posed a constant threat going forward. Graham was called upon several times and made a number of excellent saves, while Riddell also made important clearances off the line. Glendale deserved their lead at half time and Postal would need a big reaction in the second half.

Second half kicks off

Postal did exactly the opposite and were dealt a blow on 50 minutes when some poor defending allowed Glendale’s number 9 far too much time and space to fire past Graham and make it 2-0.

Postal responded well, pulling a goal back just six minutes later. Excellent work down the left between Steele and Walker saw Walker produce an excellent cut-back across the box, where Wallace found himself in acres of space to calmly dispatch beyond the Glendale keeper and give Postal hope.

Glendale continued to threaten, with their number 8 dragging an effort wide before later testing Graham, who held the shot comfortably. At the other end, McAuley beat his man and delivered a wicked cross which somehow evaded everyone in the box allowing Glendale to clear.

Wallace then saw an effort blocked before getting a second opportunity, with his follow-up delivery leading to appeal for handball, but the referee waved them away.

Postal continued to push for a way back into the game, with Hach slipping in Jones late on. Jones cut the ball back across the box, but unfortunately there were no Postal players there to finish the move.

Postal couldn’t find another goal and Glendale left Webster with a comfortable 3-1 victory.

An extremely disappointing afternoon for Postal, who ultimately fell to a 3-1 defeat. After conceding some poor goals we couldn’t create enough at the top end of the park to get back into the game. Glendale fully deserved the three points with some strong defending and moments of quality going forward. Postal will need to improve significantly going forward in what is a very competitive league.
