OPPOSITION MOTM – S.Robertson

Postal welcomed second place Grammar F.C to Webster Park on a windy, but sunny, November afternoon for this Div 2 East match. A lot of rain, the night before, meant the pitch had to be spiked and swept of puddles before the referee deemed it acceptable to be played on.

Postal dominated the first half of this match. Only two minutes into the game Postal had their first chance. A lovely through ball by Law to send Insch into the box saw the wide man lift it over the keeper but it hit the bar and away to safety.

A minute later and Grammar had a half chance though. Keeper Laing spilled a ball into the box but Riddell was on hand to block the resultant shot.

On 13 minutes an Insch corner into the box was met by Ure. He did well to get his header on target but it was cleared off the line.

On 18 minutes Postal gave away a silly free kick on the left hand side of the pitch. Laing for Postal pulled off a fine save to deny the Grammar player.

On 23 minutes, the woodwork came to the rescue of Grammar again. A great cross from Insch on the Postal left saw Law get a head on the ball but it hit the post and, again, away to safety.

At this point in the match, it was all Postal even though they were shooting up the slope.

Next up to hit the woodwork on 31 minutes was Insch when he hit a long range strike from 25 yards out which beat the keeper, but bounced off the bar. Great shot though.

On 45 minutes Grammar were awarded a free kick just outside the box, which saw their defender have to go off injured. Laing again did well to save and send both teams in at half time on equal terms.

HALF TIME – POSTAL ALC 0 – GRAMMAR FC 0

Hopes were high, that shooting down the slope in the second half Postal would dominate even more, but it was Grammar who were the better side for the opening 15 minutes of the second half. Postal were sitting far too deep and Grammar were looking more like a side second in the league.

On 12 minutes, the hard working Dowbekin had a half chance. A nice through ball from Robertson to Ure saw him feed in Dowbekin but his shot went wide of the post.

Postal began to take control of the game again as Grammar looked as if they were tiring. Postal were rewarded on 27 minutes when an Insch corner into the box was met by Sean Robertson unmarked who headed home. 1-0.

Shots on goal were few and far between from both sides as the game looked to be winding down.

Credit to Grammar though, they kept plugging away and were rewarded in the last minute of the match. A Frampton foul just inside the Postal half was flighted towards the Postal box with Postal in a line on the edge of the 18 yard box. A Grammar player won the first header into the box, another player got a shot away which Laing initially stopped but it fell to an unmarked Grammar player who knocked home. 1-1.

Overall, a disappointing end to the match for Postal, who should really be seeing the game out when it gets to the 90th minute. These things happen in amateur football though and the work rate, commitment and, more importantly, football at times today was excellent from Postal on a heavy and slippery pitch, so we can’t have too many complaints.
