Postal rocked up to a sunny Westfield knowing they needed nothing less than a win. Facing direct promotion rivals Bridge of Don they knew it would be a tough encounter. On paper BOD held the advantage only needing a point whilst postal needed all three.

Several injuries and suspensions left postal stretched thin forcing numerous changes to the squad. Among them was Ian Bruce’s first call up to the squad in over 6 years. Bruce adamant he should have in-fact been in the starting 11. Despite the setbacks and low numbers postal remained spirited, not least due to the purchase of brand new water bottles putting Bruce’s previous purchase to shame.

Postal started the encounter fast with the first chance coming in the first minute. Sully played Bruce Webster in down the wing with Webster swinging an inviting cross into the box however no one was able to apply the finishing touch.

The breakthrough would come only 4 minutes later as the BOD goalkeeper made a mess of clearing a pass back only managing to strike the ball into a charging Marko with the ball ricocheting off him and ending up in the back of the net.

(5 mins 1-0 Postal)

Bridge of Don began to come into the game with a few half chances however nothing for Cormack to worry about. Postal quickly shut them down however in the 10th minute. Some lovely one touch football saw sultan released 1 on 1 with the Bridge of Don keeper. Ahmed steadied himself and coolly slotted past a deflated BOD keeper.

(10 mins 2-0 Postal)

10 minutes in and two nil up postal were cruising and already feeling a step closer to promotion.

Postal continued to play well down both wings with Andreas giving the BOD fullback a difficult time, and winning multiple free kicks.

19 minutes in postal held their breath

as the ball fell to Mackenzie at the edge of the box. Expecting a trademark thunder strike from the striker the ball instead slowly trickled out for a goalkick.

Bridge of Don’s first chance would come in the 24th minute as a dodgy Doug back pass would see the BOD striker go 1on1 with Cormack who made himself big and pulled out a great save.

On 34 minutes Jones was played in behind but fired over from all of six yards. An impressive feat from that distance.

Disaster struck just before half time, Ahmed was caught sleeping and the bod no 10 nipped in from of him to receive the ball from a thrown in on the edge of the box he was then brought down in a crazy tackle from Luca resulting in a penalty. The last thing postal needed on the brink of Half time.

BOD number 11 sent Cormack the wrong way slotting the ball into the bottom right corner.

(42 mins 2-1 Postal)

Half Time

The break featured an inaugural half time charity crossbar challenge won by suspended striker McAuley.

Postal looked to restore their two goal cushion just 4 minutes into the second half. Ahmed released Dunc down the wing who squared back to Ahmed who fired straight at the keeper from all of 7 yards with all the time in the world.

In the 57th minute Mackenzie produced a moment of class plucking the ball out of the sky with a sublime touch before laying back to Jones. Jones looked to find Ahmed on the wing however it was a poor pass in the end.

The hour mark came and postal were still looking for that 3rd goal to give them some breathing room.

Marko replaced by Buggie

Ahmed was hacked down unfairly on the edge of the box however the ref somehow didn’t give a foul, seconds later Luca was brought down with an even worse tackle which the ref did punish.

The equaliser arrived in the 67th minute. A double save from Cormack looked to have gotten postal out of danger however just seconds later Buggie was caught in no man’s land and this saw the BOD winger through 1 on 1 with Cormack where he took his chance well and slotted home for and even game. Back to square one for postal.

(67 mins 2-2 Postal)

Ahmed fired over in the 75th minute as postal pushed desperately for the winner.

Patterson replaces Luca

Moments later, a dangerous ball headed across goal saw Ahmed head past the BOD keeper, only for it to be cleared off the line by the Bridge of Don centre half, much to Ahmed’s frustration as he searched for his Brace.

The resulting corner saw the ball drop favourably into the six yard box to  Doug who looked to smash it home. The postal sideline began celebrating only for the ball to drift agonisingly wide.

The closing minutes saw a few half chances for postal however they couldn’t get that decisive touch.

Full Time

Ultimately a disappointing result but with much to admire given the thin and ageing squad on the day.

Postals dreams of promotion are over for another season however the campaign is far from over. Two huge fixtures await in the coming week including a Derby day clash and a semi final.
