After a delayed start, due to the opposition forgetting to give the Ref team lines, Polska got the match underway in thick fog, but it didn’t take long for the first warning sign at the back for Postal.
In the 6th minute, a quick Polska corner caught the defence off guard, finding their number 15 whose effort was brilliantly blocked on the line by Riddell. The danger wasn’t over, as number 10 followed up, but Cormack reacted sharply to gather the ball.
Polska continued to press early, and in the 10th minute a cross-field pass found number 15, who cleverly laid it off first time to number 10. His shot was well struck, but again Cormack was equal to it with a solid save.
Postal began to grow into the game, and their breakthrough came in the 13th minute. A long ball from Clark found Ahmed, who linked up well with Wallace before returning it to Clark. A perfectly timed pass then slipped MacKenzie through, and he made no mistake, calmly finishing under the keeper to give Postal a 0–1 lead.
Polska responded in the 17th minute with a ball into the box. Veitch attempted to clear, but it fell to number 10 whose hooked effort struck the post and went out for a goal kick — a let-off for Postal.
The lead was doubled in the 23rd minute thanks to excellent teamwork. Steele won possession and played MacKenzie through. Unselfishly, Mackenzie squared it to McAuley, who made no mistake in firing home to make it 0–2.
Postal looked in control, although MacKenzie saw a promising move halted for offside in the 28th minute. Just a minute later, Polska’s number 15 produced a strong individual run, beating multiple players before unleashing a powerful shot that Cormack did well to save.
Defensive resilience was on display in the 34th minute when a dangerous throw towards goal, but Adam produced a superb last-ditch tackle to deny a clear chance on number 15.
Polska continued to threaten from set pieces, with number 15 striking the bar from a free kick in the 36th minute. McAuley was also shown a yellow card during this period of pressure for gesturing towards the ref.
As the half neared its end, Postal created chances to extend their lead. MacKenzie fired over in the 39th minute from an acute angle, before Ahmed had two golden opportunities. In the 42nd minute, he dispossessed the centre half and went one-on-one, only to be denied by the keeper. A minute later, after being released with a great throw ball, he rounded the keeper but saw his effort cleared off the line by a Polska defender.
Half-Time: 0–2
Postal started the second half on the front foot. In the 48th minute, MacKenzie again slipped Ahmed through, but the keeper came out on top in another one-on-one situation.
Controversy followed in the 52nd minute when McAuley appeared to be fouled clean through on goal. The referee’s decision led to Ian Bruce being sent off.
Despite the disruption, Postal kept creating chances. Wallace saw a free kick saved in the 59th minute, and just three minutes later combined well with Ahmed in a one-two before being denied by the keeper.
The chances kept coming. In the 63rd minute, Steele played a ball over the top to McAuley, who found himself one-on-one, but the keeper pulled off yet another save.
In the 68th minute, McAuley rounded the keeper and laid it off to Wallace, whose shot appeared to strike a defender’s hand. Appeals were waved away by the referee.
Veitch picked up a booking in the 69th minute following a challenge on number 15, as the game became more physical.
Postal pushed hard to kill the game. In the 70th minute, Clark drove forward and found MacKenzie. The ball eventually fell to Ahmed and then Wallace, but the effort was blocked behind for a corner. Wallace then forced another save in the 71st minute.
Ahmed continued to be a constant threat but was denied yet again in the 73rd minute in another one-on-one situation with the Polska keeper.
75th Min, Jones replaced McAuley, Robb replaced MacKenzie and Buggie replaced Ahmed.
Late in the game, Postal nearly put it beyond doubt. In the 83rd minute, Jones broke through and saw his shot saved. The rebound fell to Robb, who squared it to Vinnie, but his effort was heroically blocked on the line.
Polska pulled one back in the 86th minute after a lapse in concentration. A throw-in wasn’t dealt with, and the ball fell to number 15, who finished well to make it 1–2 and set up a tense finale.
However, Postal responded in the best possible way. In the 90th minute, Wallace played a perfectly weighted through ball to Jones, who raced clear and emphatically finished, literally bursting the net to seal the victory at 1–3 with his first goal for the club.
Full-Time: Postal ALC 3 – 1 Polska
Good away win for Postal this evening against strong opposition. Defensively the team looked really solid with the team playing really good football and creating multiple chances. On another night the scoreline could have been double figures, not to be.
Onto Saturday as the games keep coming thick and fast,
MoM – Phil Wallace
Goals – Duncan MacKenzie, Harry McAuley, Andreas Jones
Booked – Adam Veitch, Harry McAuley
