OPPOSITION MOTM – B.Patterson

Postal travelled to Stonehaven for this Div 1 North game on the Astro on a bitter cold Saturday afternoon.  The last encounter at Webster Park saw Postal spanked 2-6 so a hard game was envisaged against a good young side.

The first half was a fairly even affair.  Mill Inn probably had more procession than the visitors, using the large park and passing the ball around nicely, but never really created many chances.

Postal had a decent half chance on 7 minutes.  A ball over the top was picked up by Mackenzie on the edge of the box, the Mill Inn keeper came running out towards the edge of the box but Mackenzie’s, shot over the keeper’s head went over the bar to safety.

Postal were dealt a blow, 20 minutes into the match.  From a corner into the box keeper Walker fell awkwardly and hurt his knee.  He had to be replaced and Brechin volunteered from the bench.

He was immediately called into action from a set-piece and did well to hold the ball from the resultant cross.

Mill Inn were getting a lot of corners which was a bit concerning at this point, with a new keeper, but they never really created anything more than half chances.

On 45 minutes Postal had a gilt-edged chance to go ahead.  A superb through ball from Steele into the feed of Frampton who managed to get in behind the Mill Inn defence on the left.  From about 10 yards out he lifted the ball over the on-running keeper but it went wide much to the frustration of the Postal bench.

A minute later, and Postal squandered another cracking chance to go in front at the break.  Another great ball from Steele found Abel on the Postal right.  He cross the ball across the face of the goal but the in running Clark couldn’t connect and the ball ran away to safety.

HALF TIME – AC Mill Inn 0 – Postal ALC 0

Postal started the second half as they finished the first by missing a good chance.  This time is was Abel, who went through on goal but lifted the ball over the bar.

In the amateurs, when you continue to pass up opportunities to score, its usually only a matter of time before the other team take their chance which AC Mill Inn did, 16 minutes into the second period.  After numerous chances to clear our lines but failing, the ball was eventually crossed into the box where the unmarked number 17 was on hand to head past Brechin.  1-0.

Credit to Postal, though, it only took 5 minutes to equalise.  A cross from the Postal left found Abel unmarked at the back post.  He did well to keep his composure to tuck his shot away low into the keeper’s right hand post.  1-1.

Buoyed from this equaliser Postal put the pressure on the home defence and had the chance of the match 24 minutes into the half.  Mackenzie was slipped through on the Postal right.  He bore down on the Mill Inn goal but launched his shot over the bar with only the keeper to beat.

Both sides kept battling to get the winner and just as it looked like it might end in a stalemate it was the home side who scored their second.  Substitute Ahmed conceded a free kick.  The ball was fired into the Postal box, Mill Inn won the first header at the Postal back post and a home player was on hand 6 yards out unmarked to fire home. 2-1.

Postal pushed boys forward in an effort to get an equaliser but were caught on the break on 88 minutes when Patterson found himself isolated on the Postal right.  The forward went by him and fired in a worldy from about 15 yards out.  Game over.  3-1.

Full Time – AC Mill Inn 3 – POSTAL ALC 1

Overall really disappointing to lose 2 late goals when it looked like we would pick up at least a point.  The long and short of it, is, we missed far too many very decent chances (some sitters) today while our opponents scored theirs.   Can’t fault the effort from the team today, at all, though, against a team who look like they will compete to win the league this year.  Next up Cammachmore away at Kaimhill.
