Postal arrived at Aboyne on a cloudy, but warm, day to play their first competitive match since March 2020.
The Aboyne pitch is one of the larger pitches in the amateurs and it looked like it took Postal a while to get to grips with it’s size. They weren’t dominating the midfield as they would normally, although still playing the better football of the two sides in the first half.
On 9 minutes Postal had the first chance of the game. A Patterson header at the back post was knocked down into the 6 yard box. Following an old fashioned “stramash” where Ure had a swipe at the ball, it was eventually cleared for a corner.
On 11 minutes Ure had a great chance to give Postal the lead. Good work by Lamb coming into the Aboyne box from the Postal right saw him cut the ball back to the incoming Ure. His shot lacked power, though, and was easily saved from the Aboyne keeper who was playing well and dominating his box in this first period.
The Postal passing was leaving a bit to be desired at this stage in the game. Some of the grass on the pitch was quite long but that shouldn’t have caused balls to be over or under hit quite as much as was happening in the opening half hour.
On 25 minutes the home side almost took the lead. The ball was struck with some venom from around 15 yards but Laing in goal for Postal pulled off a really good save when the ball looked like it was flying into the top corner.
Postal missed the sitter of the first half on 40 minutes. Some great build up play between Lamb and Insch saw Insch played into the box from the Postal left, one on one with the keeper, but he blazed over the bar from 6 yards out.
HALF TIME – ABOYNE 0 - POSTAL ALC 0
The second half was much better from Postal. Passing was sharper and the attacks were quicker.
The first half chance came 3 mins into the half when Lamb timed his 3rd man run into the box perfectly but his shot was sclaffed and Ure waiting at the back post was deemed offside.
On ten minutes Postal took the lead and it was a great goal. Lamb strode forward with the ball, played it into the path of Insch who stroked it home with a first time, low, strike from distance. Lovely goal, it really was. 0-1.
Nine minutes later and Postal doubled their lead. The ball was played down the Postal left. Insch put over a good cross to the back post where Ure was waiting unmarked to loop a header over the keeper and into the net. 0-2.
By 22 minutes, the game was basically over when Ure scored his second of the match and Postal’s third. The ball was sent through to substitute Mewes. He then played a nice ball with the outside of his foot into the path of Ure who tucked the ball away. 0-3.
On 36 minutes Patterson saw a header saved from a set-piece into the box. One of the few headers Postal actually attacked and won today it must be said.
Aboyne pulled one back 38 minutes into the half when a midfielder was allowed to stroll into the box unmarked. It eventually fell to him and he stroked the ball home to give the home side a wee bit of hope. 1-3.
Thankfully for Postal they upped their game again and soon regained their 3 goal advantage when Mewes scored from just outside the box after a cut back from the left. 1-4.
Overall, brilliant to get back playing competitive football again. After a frustrating first half Postal did well to continue to keep the ball on the floor and their patience was rewarded with some really good goals. Well done to all involved today.
