OPPOSITION MOTM – Stevey Carter
After two heavy league defeats in a row, Postal arrived at Balgownie to play last years Div2 champions University anticipating a hard game.
With Walker and Cruickshank both injured Cormack made his first start of the season in goal. Dowbekin came back into right back with Carter moving into centre defence and Giulianotti moving into stiffen up the midfield. Frampton came into the starting 11 with Melia out injured.
Postal started the half really well and were the dominant side, playing a lot of good passing football. It was Uni who scored first, though, when they countered down the Postal left hand side. Postal were slow to shut down the cross ball but were unlucky when the cross was miss-hit directly over the head of Cormack. 1-0.
Postal did well to not let it affect their play and continued to dominate procession of the football with Uni happy to try the long raking pass to try and get in behind the Postal defence. Stuart and Abel on the Postal left were doing particularly well.
On 11 minutes a Steele free kick into the box was met by Patterson but he header went wide of the post.
2 minutes later, Abel picked up the ball on the Postal left, went on a run, cut inside and sent a lovely weighted shot over the top of the Uni keeper’s head from about 25 yards out. 1-1.
Postal should have took the lead on 16 minutes. Another free kick into the box, Patterson’s header dropped to the feet of Stuart at the back post but his shot hit the side netting.
On 20 minutes the Uni number 10 sprung the Postal offside trap, got the ball into the box and Cormack pulled off a good save from the resulting shot.
Postal were rewarded for their good football on 31 minutes. Frampton got in behind the Uni defence and was bearing down on goal when he was cynically brought down just outside the box. The Uni defender was sent off. Clark stepped up to the take the free kick and deposited it in the postage stamp area of the goal. 1-2.
Postal should have doubled their lead 2 minutes later when good work by Abel sent a through ball to Frampton one on one with the keeper, who unfortunately saved it.
On 35 minutes, Postal scored their 3rd. Stuart fired in a shot from distance which the keeper could only parry and Webster was on hand to poke the ball home. 1-3.
Just before half time, the Uni goalkeeper made a good save from a Giulianotti shot from outside the box.
HALF TIME – UNIVERSITY 1 - POSTAL ALC 3
A very strange second half saw University sit off Postal and be happy to let the away side pass it around at the back. The occasional counter attack but nothing that would suggest they could pull themselves back into the game.
They did have a chance on 3 minutes when a long ball over the top of the square Postal defence saw Cormack make another good save from the pacy Uni number 15.
On 6 minutes a Steele corner found Patterson’s head. His header was blocked and Frampton’s rebound was headed over the bar.
A minute later, a good move down the Postal right saw the cross into the box met by Abel and into the path of the stretching Frampton, who could only knock the ball over the bar.
On 12 minutes a series of good passing ended with the Uni keeper making a save which was only cleared as far as Steele. His side footed controlled shot went just past the post.
18 minutes, another corner, another Patterson header over the bar, although getting closer.
Postal killed the game 18 minutes into the second half when they countered from a Uni corner quickly up the park. Webster cut the ball across to Clark from the Postal right who scored. 1-4.
On 33 minutes Raynard, on for Giulianotti, was sent through into the box but his shot went just past the post.
4 minutes later, Willey, on for Abel, cut into the box from the Postal left but his shot went over the bar.
On 41 minutes a great distance shot from Dowbekin hit the bar. Cotovici followed in to make sure the ball was hit over the line. 1-5.
Willey finished the attacking from Postal on 43 minutes with a shot over the bar from 8 yards out.
Overall a terrific response today after 2 heavy defeats. Great attitude and workrate after going a goal down, but more importantly, some really nice passing football today on show. Well done.
