OPPOSITION MOTM – J.Steele

After some dryer days last week, Postal were happy to report that the Webster Park pitch was playable although very soft in places.

Postal had to shuffle the pack again today due to injuries, suspensions and holidays.  Carter came in at right back, Raynard at centre back, Steele back into centre mid and Bruce Webster started the game up top alongside Frampton.

Postal had a fairly decent start to the game and it was an even first ten minutes.  After that, Great Western probably had the majority of play without generating too many chances as they won a number of corner kicks to apply pressure.

It was from one of these corners on 23 minutes that the away side took the lead.  A corner from the Postal left saw Gt Western make first contact at the front post.  When the ball broke, a Great Western player did well to scissor kick into the net.  0-1.

This seemed to spark Postal into life and it’s fair to say they were the better side for the remainder of the half (and the game).

It only took a minute after the restart to equalise.  A Postal break down the right saw Maciver cross into the box.  Steele powered a header towards goal which bounced off the ground and over the keeper, into the net.  Powerful header but the keeper will be thinking he could have done better.  1-1.

On 35 minutes Postal nearly took the lead when a Raynard header from a set piece hit the bar and away to safety.

Two minutes later, a good passing move down the Postal right saw Maciver end up in front of the goalie in the box.  His shot lacked any power and was sent straight into the keeper’s hands.

HALF TIME – POSTAL ALC 1 – Great Western Utd 1

A nightmare start to the half saw Postal concede in the first minute.  Number 10 picked up the ball, ghosted past the static Postal defence and shot home from just inside the Postal box.  Really nice finish but slack from the Postal defence to let him get his shot away so easily, unchallenged.

Thankfully, Postal didn’t lay down and rallied again, dominating the rest of the game.

They were eventually rewarded on 27 minutes.  A set piece into the box saw the ball land at Patterson’s feet.  He laid it into the path of Steele who calmly slotted the ball home, low into the corner of the net.  2-2.

This should have set Postal on the path to win the game but they slit their own throats 2 minutes later when a L.Giulianotti interception from outside the box was fired towards Cormack in goal.  The keeper went down to retrieve it, but it squirmed under his bod and over the line.  2-3.

Postal changed formation to go 3 at the back and sent on Cotovici up front.  More and more pressure was applied, with the away side resorting to kicking lumps out of Postal and mostly getting away with it as the ref looked like he had forgotten his cards today.

Postal finally got their reward on 42 minutes when a corner was swung in from the Postal left and, captain, Patterson was on hand to bullet a header into the net.  3-3.

Full Time – Postal ALC 3 – Great Western Utd 3

Overall, a very decent performance from Postal today.  Great Western look to be running away with this league, so to pick up a point and score 3 goals into the bargain is not to be sniffed at.  Another 3 goals conceded is a bit of a concern but if we play like this every week, we will win more than we lose.  Well done.
