BSFC arrived at Webster Park for this Dickie Trophy match in a great vein of form.  The away side have scored 34 goals alone in the league with only 21 goals conceded so Postal knew they faced an uphill battle if they were to advance to the next round of the cup.

Postal were forced to make changes to the team and squad with 9 players missing through injury and holidays.  Euan Brechin returned to the centre of defence with Vinnie Buggie taking his place on the right wing.

Postal lined up as below:

  1. Shaun Walker

  2. Bruce Webster

  3. Andrew Riddell

  4. Euan Brechin

  5. James Steele

  6. Keiron Dowbekin

  7. Vinnie Buggie (s)

  8. Alex Clark

  9. Harry McAuley

  10. Phil Wallace

  11. Steven Abel

Bench:

  1. Fraser Smith

  2. Mark Robb

  3. Grant Cormack

BSFC kicked the game off and the opening exchanges were fairly even, with the first notable moment arriving in the 5th minute when BSFC won a corner. The delivery into the box was dealt with well by Steele, who cleared the danger.

Postal began to grow into the game and came close to opening the scoring in the 10th minute. Riddell switched play brilliantly to Abel, who broke clear and drove into the box. His touch carried him toward the byline however, but he cut the ball back cleverly for Wallace who seen his effort go into the arms of the goalkeeper.

BSFC responded with a couple of chances of their own. In the 19th minute, their number 10 showed good strength to ride two tackles before feeding number 7, who hit a low shot that Shaun saved well, pushing it behind for a corner. Postal cleared the resulting set piece, but moments later another corner caused problems as number 9 rose unmarked, only to head over the bar in the 20th minute.

Postal had an opportunity to threaten from a set piece themselves in the 30th minute after McAuley was fouled in a dangerous area, but Riddell’s free kick drifted wide of the target.

Both sides traded free kicks around the 35th minute mark. A BSFC effort struck the wall, while at the other end a Wallace free kick took a deflection and went behind for a corner, which Riddell delivered into the box.

Postal produced one of their best passages of play in the 38th minute. Playing out confidently from the back, Webster slipped Alex down the line. His cross found McAuley, who laid the ball back for Wallace, but his effort was blocked by a defender.

Unfortunately for Postal, the breakthrough went the other way a minute later in unfortunate circumstances. In the 39th minute, a long ball over the top caused confusion and Steele’s attempted header back to keeper Walker ended up skipping past his own goalkeeper and into the net to give BSFC a 0–1 lead.

The setback was quickly compounded. Just a minute later, Buggie conceded a free kick and the resulting delivery into the box was met by number 5, who outmuscled Dowbekin and forced the ball home to make it 0–2.

BSFC almost added a third just before the interval when a long throw into the box in the 45th minute found number 8, but his header went over the bar as Postal went into half-time trailing 2–0.

BSFC started the second half brightly. In the 46th minute, they broke down Postal’s right side and a cross found number 4, whose header was well saved by Shaun. Postal were then fortunate in the 52nd minute when confusion in defence allowed number 7 to chip an effort wide of the target with Walker off his line.

Postal began to push forward in response. In the 55th minute, Riddell delivered a free kick that found Brechin, but his shot was saved by the goalkeeper. A minute later BSFC’s number 4 struck a powerful long-range effort that crashed against the crossbar.

The hosts continued to threaten as the hour mark approached. In the 60th minute, a long ball over Webster released number 9, but Shaun was again equal to the effort and made a solid save. BSFC’s number 11 then flashed a shot wide in the 65th minute.

Postal were sitting far too deep and camped out in their own half.  BSFC at this stage of the game looked like they were going to score further goals so the Postal management team replaced Buggie with Robb and went with two up top to see if we could push BSFC back.  Almost immediately this found joy.

Postal finally found a breakthrough in the 66th minute thanks to a well-worked move down the left. Clark carried the ball forward and delivered a dangerous cross into the box where Robb was on hand to finish confidently and reduce the deficit to 1–2.

With momentum now shifting, Postal continued to attack. In the 70th minute, Clark again drove down the left and crossed into the box. Abel picked out Dowbekin, whose return cross flashed across goal with nobody able to apply the finishing touch.

The equaliser eventually arrived in spectacular fashion in the 75th minute. Webster launched a throw-in towards Dowbekin, who flicked the ball on into McAuleys path. From around 25 yards out, McAuley struck a superb effort that flew in off the post to bring Postal level at 2–2.

BSFC pushed to regain the lead and nearly did so in the 79th minute when a corner found number 5, whose powerful header forced an excellent save from Walker. Another corner followed in the 83rd minute, but Robb snuffed out the danger.

Postal then produced a moment of quality from a set piece in the 86th minute. Riddell delivered a free kick into the box and Brechin met it perfectly, powering a header that struck the post and bounced into the top corner, giving Postal what looked to be a dramatic late winner as the crowd went crazy.

3 – 2

There was still one final twist. In the 90th minute, Robb was rugby-tackled inside the box by BSFC’s number 3, and the referee pointed to the spot. Wallace stepped up to take the penalty, but the goalkeeper guessed correctly and made the save to deny Postal a further goal.

MoM – N/A

Goals – Euan Brechin, Harry McAuley, Mark Robb

Booked – N/A

In truth Postal didn’t play well until the 60th minute today.  BSFC applied pressure across the pitch and Postal sat far too deep trying not to concede rather than advance up the field and play football.  Credit to the team however, from the 60th minute onwards the teams fitness shone through and they managed to produce moments of real quality to come back and secure the win with a last minute winner for the second week in a row.
