OPPOSITION MOTM – B.Patterson

Postal took on league leaders Great Western United at Kaimhill in this Div 1 North league game.  The last game was a keenly fought out 3-3 draw so a tough match was on the cards.

Postal started the game well.  Playing better in the first ten minutes of the match than they had in 90 against BSFC.

On 7 minutes Abel was sent in behind the Great Western right back.  He cut the ball back but just missed Webster arriving in the 6 yard box.

On 22 minutes a good passing move on the Postal left saw Giulianotti get his shot away from distance but it went by the post.

On 34 minutes Carter was correctly booked for a high Kung-Fu style kick.

On a tight pitch neither side did much to bother the goalkeepers and the half ended all square.

HALF TIME – Great Western United 0 – Postal ALC 0

The second half was much the same theme.  Both sides battling to gain an advantage but little to bother either keeper.

Postal had a half chance on 4 minutes when a nice move down the Postal right saw Abel head over the bar from the cross.

On 11 minutes Postal were awarded a foul.  The ball was sent into the box but Patterson’s header went over the bar again.

Almost identical on 20 minutes when Patteson, again, headed over the bar from a free-kick into the box.

On 29 minutes, the league leaders took the lead.  With Postal attacking a corner the ball was cleared up the park.  Instead of heading it away, the ball was allowed to bounce and Great Western flooded forward.  Just when it looked like Postal had recovered their defensive positions the ball was picked up by a Great Western player who fired in a worldy from about 25 yards out.  Keeper Cormack did well to get a hand to it but couldn’t keep it out of the top corner.  Really good goal but school-boy defending to stand and watch him get his shot away in the first instance.  1-0.

Great Western ended the game as a contest 5 minutes later.  A Great Western winger went by Webster on the Postal left and when the cross was fired in low, an unmarked forward was on hand to knock it into the net. 2-0

Postal had a half chance to get one back on 36 minutes when Mackenzie headed just over the bar.

Full Time – Great Western United 2 – POSTAL ALC 0

Overall, a much improved performance from Postal today.  Much better football, passing etc than the previous two games, but the players will be mad with themselves they handed over the points with two goals which could, and should, have been better defended.
