OPPOSITION MOTM – J.Black

Postal travelled to league leaders Auchnagatt Barons on a bright and dry mid-October Saturday afternoon ideal for football. Postal were a tad light on bodies but started with a very strong starting 11.

It was the home side who started the game as they meant to go on, though, and were immediately on the attack from the first whistle. Postal were lucky to avoid giving a goal away when an Auchnagatt striker found himself one-on-one with Cormack but luckily for Postal he put his shot past the post.

On 3 minutes B. Patterson had a chance from a corner but his effort sailed over the bar. A sequence of events which, frustratingly, would repeat itself over the next 40 minutes as the Barons looked particularly vulnerable to set pieces into the box in the opening period.

A half chance for Postal on 9 minutes when Clark drove with the ball. It found its way to Ure who laid it into the path of Lamb but his shot went over the bar.

The home side looked particularly good on the counter attack, fast and powerful, and on numerous occasions would overload the Postal defence with bodies. They scored the opener with a counter on 11 minutes. Carter, dived in to tackle around 10 yards from the Auchnagatt box. He missed the ball, and player. Auchnagatt’s Moir then ran from deep in his own half, completely unchallenged, by a ball-watching Postal midfield and defence. He slipped the ball to the unmarked forward who made no mistake in slamming past Cormack. 1-0.

It only took 5 minutes for Postal to equalise. A nice ball over the top of the Baron’s defence saw the keeper run out to clear but Lamb got there first and headed over the keeper’s head to score. 1-1.

The game at this point was fairly even although most of Postal’s chances were coming from set-pieces and long throws from Clark while Auchnagatt looked the more likely to score from open play.

On 24 minutes the home side regained the lead. A Barons player went by Ure on the right, first, then Riddle, before playing it into the path of his colleague who shot home. 2-1.

On 31 minutes Black had a great chance to equalise but his header went over the bar.

Another header over the bar from Postal on 34 minutes, this time from Ure from another Clark long throw.

On 39 minutes, the home side got their 3rd goal. They advanced far too easily down the Postal left hand side, a ball into the striker and his shot deflected off of Riddell and into the net. 3-1. Postal now all over the place defensively and any shape fast disintegrating. Luckily half time arrived before Auchnagatt could score again.

HALF TIME – AUCHNAGATT BARONS 3 - POSTAL ALC 1

Strong words from players and coaches at half time in a bid to turn the game around but, if anything, Postal were worse after the break. Shape abandoned, work rate reduced (if that was possible), attitude and body language terrible with a few of the players looking like they would rather be anywhere than on that pitch.

Auchnagatt looked hungry and scored their 4th just 3 minutes into the half. Clark gave the ball away. The resulting cross into the box saw the defence criminally nowhere near their men and it was an easy tap-in for the unmarked forward. 4-1.

11 minutes into the half and it was game over. Riddle missed a tackle on the right. Attempted to foul the opposition player but that didn’t work either. Rest of the defence, again, nowhere to be found and the ball to the back post was slotted home unchallenged. 5-1.

Ten minutes later and it was 6-1 when the Auchnagatt player was allowed to run through unchallenged laid the ball off to the striker who shot home.

A corner dropped to Postal’s Ryan Insch 30 minutes into the half who hit it low into the net for a consolation. 6-2.

Ure scored another for Postal on 37 minutes from another set piece header to complete the scoring. 6-3.

Overall, by far and away the worse Postal performance for over a year. Auchnagatt were impressive from an attacking perspective, showing why they are top of the league and were deserved winners, but they weren’t made to work for their win as much as they should have been as Postal lay down and got their bellies tickled in a second half display which was sickening to watch from the sidelines. Unacceptable.

Auchnagatt's report on the match can be read below:

Barons sent Postal packing at the Gatt arena today.

The game started with a high tempo and the Gatt were in behind the defence within 30 seconds but Moir blasted just wide of the post.

The away side looked a threat from set pieces early on and the Barons knew they’d need to be focused.

A few headers over the bar was all the away side could muster in the early exchanges.

It was the Barons who took the lead when Moir ran with the ball in the middle, played a lovely ball through to Craig who smashed it into the corner. 1-0

The game was levelled when a long ball over the top was not dealt with and a midfielder was in behind to head over Callum and into the net. 1-1

The game became end to end as both sides were looking to take the lead. It was to be the home side who took it when Captain Lyon played a great ball into Craig’s path and the man slotted it in for his second. 2-1

The lead was extended when Moir played another great ball but this time into Warren who hit the ball, and with the help of a deflection , and made it three! 3-1

Just before the half ended, a great chance fell to Craig for his hat-trick but he blasted the ball wide of the far post.

HT: 3-1

Barons came out the traps in the second half flying. Lads were well aware that the roasting the away side received at half time would get them going.

10 mins into the half and Sangster got the ball out wide, lifted the head and swung a ball in for Taylor to tap home. 4-1

The home side were in full control and had a few more chances to extend the lead. One big one an audacious overhead kick from Taylor which clipped the post and the ball went out of play.

Barons made it 5 when Moir fancied a goal instead himself. Warren returned the favour and played it in to Moir who’s trickled shot made it into the far corner. 5-1

5 became 6 were Moir played a lovely ball through to Craig for his third assist of the day and Craig’s hat-trick! 6-1

Postal kept pushing and their number 11 got the ball down in the box and pinged it between Hall and the post to get one back. 6-2

The away side continued to have a lot of long throws and on one managed to hit the bar twice before someone finally bundled it in to the net. 6-3

A bit unfortunate to see three goals conceded today but the effort from every man in a white shirt was second to none!!
