OPPOSITION MOTM – N/A

Postal gave up home advantage in this Association Cup game after Webster Park was deemed unplayable for the second week running.  Thankfully the Astro Turf in Alford was perfect.

The first ten minutes were fairly even but after that opening period Premier League Alford dominated the rest of the half.

They had their first chance on ten minutes.  A well worked corner to the edge of the box saw the Alford player control and strike a good shot at goal.  Cormack in goal produced a good save to push it past the post.

5 minutes later, after a number of corners, Alford took the lead.  Wiley lost procession on the Postal left resulting in Clark giving away a free kick just outside the box.  The Alford player stepped up and struck a low shot into the keepers right hand corner.  Cormack managed to get a hand to it but not enough to keep it out.  1-0.

Postal were working hard and weren’t making things easy for the home side but no sooner had they won the ball back, they would pass it back to Alford.  Really poor passing and ball retention from Postal today which would continue the whole game unfortunately.

On one of our very few ventures into the opposition half Postal got a bit of luck.  A decent passing move between Steele and Maciver up the postal right saw the cross into the box hit the hand of an Alford defender and Postal were awarded a penalty.  Steele stepped up and drove it home past the keeper on his right.  1-1.

Just when it looked like Postal would go in at the break on equal terms, Alford scored a second just before half time.  A long shot from Alford could only be parried by Cormack into the path of an Alford player who slotted home.  2-1.

HALF TIME – ALFORD 2 - POSTAL ALC 1

The second half was much the same as the first.  Postal didn’t make things easy for Alford but they couldn’t keep hold of the ball and even on the small pitch couldn’t get the forwards into the game.

Alford scored the killer 3rd goal on 23 minutes.  A mix up between Carter and Patterson in the centre of defence allowed the ball to drop to an Alford forward.  He didn’t mess about, got his shot away early low into the net.  3-1.

Postal huffed and puffed but never managed a single corner or created even a half chance.

Alford scored a 4th on 43 minutes when Patterson was turned on the edge of the box and the striker shot home to make it a more realistic scoreline 4-1.

Full Time – ALFORD 4 – POSTAL ALC 1

Overall, good to get a game today and blow the cobwebs away.  The effort Postal put in today couldn’t be questioned.  Even when it was obvious we were beaten at 3-1 we still worked hard to stay in the game.  The passing from Postal was horrendous though.  Possibly to be expected after the Xmas period of no games but still frustrating to watch on the sidelines.  No corners for Postal tells it’s own story.  Better team won.
